Tensile strength, as applied to architecture, is the ability of a material to span horizontal distances with minimum support from underneath. Wood and stone do not have great tensile strength when used in post-and-lintel construction. These materials will yield and cave in when forced to span long distances, so supporting posts must be provided at close intervals. Strong plastic and metal however, have great tensile strength.

A groin vault is a vault produced by the intersection at right angles of two barrel vaults. Sometimes the arches of groin vaults are pointed instead of round. In comparison with a barrel vault, a groin vault provides good economies of material and labour.
Groin vault construction was first exploited by the Romans.

The Pointed ark architecture emerged in Europe in the Gothic period during the mid 12th to the 16th centuries. This type of architecture offers many advantages, for example, the pointed arches channel the weight down to the ground therefore, the cathedrals could be much taller. Also, to reinforce these massive walls from outside the architects invented butresses, piers, and flying butresses.

The geodesic dome was created by an American engineer named R. Buckminster Fuller. The dome which is basically is a bubble that is formed by metal rods arranged in triangles and further organized into tetrahedrons. What makes this interesting is that the metal framework can be sheathed in several lightweight materials including wood, glass, and plastic. Even though it is lightweight the dome is uniquely strong.

Blown glass is the art or process of shaping an object from molten glass by blowing air into it through a tube. By doing this you can shape and cut the glass in various methods. Being able to blow the glass into many shapes gives numerous uses for it, because you can practically make whatever you want.

The DOric Column was one of the three organizational systems of classical architecture; it had no base. The other two were the Ionic and the Corinthian. it had a massive shaft, with 20 flutes, made up of a group of annulets, a projecting curved molding called the echinus, and a square slab or abacus at the top.
