Art and Nature theme is really interesting because it is related to our environment. From mountains to clouds, and from trees to the rivers, it shows the natural beauty of our universe which I believe is very important to appreciate. Thomas Cole's paintings are very different from the ordinary because they show our mother nature in a different perspective.
Abstract art is descriptive art in which all forms are purposefully simplified or distorted. In Picasso's piece "Seated Women Holding a Fan", he used the appearences of the world as a starting point. He selected certain aspects of he saw, then simplified or exaggerated them to make his painting.
The Arts of daily life theme, can brings peoples emotion, experience, and culture into view. In Jan Van Eyck's portrait of "Giovanni Arnolfini and wife," Eyck uses many religious symbolism custom to they’re culture. This portrait can be dated to the early Renaissance period and also shared as "Giovanni Arnolfini and wife" daily life.
The Art that tells a story or shows history intrigues me. You can look at many paintings, drawings, or sculptures and with out words you can read the story behind the picture. In the book, the Italian artist Sassetta illustrates a couple of episodes from Saint Francis' life all in the oil painting where St. Francis is Giving His Mantle to a Poor Man and the Vision of the Heavenly City.
Abstract Art is very interesting because it allows the artist express themselves in a more simplistic way that goes beyond what we are used to see everyday. For example, in Pat Steir's "Summer Moon" the colors transmit a peaceful, fresh sense attractive to the eye, but at the same time show the precision of every stroke and the concept behind it.
One theme that I find very interesting is representational art, which can appear so lifelike that one is sure to be fooled. These sculptures can represent people doing ordinary things, from tourists to housepainters. I can't believe how lifelike Duane Hanson's "Housepainter III" is, and can only imagine how long a process such as that takes.
Artists that use the earth to compliment their talent have a unique way of touching others thoughts. It shows the connection between one's mind and the atmosphere they live in. Maya Lin shows great expertice in showing her perspective on how life and art compliment the earth.
Stylized art is facinating, for example in the text there is a picture of Hathor and Sety, detail of a pillar from the tomb of Sety I. Although there is great detail over all, the two people in the art look as if they were the same person in different clothing. Their hands and faces look the same with very slight differences. They are two dementional figures. I have yet to see an Egyptian painting differ from that style.
Politics and social order were themes in some of the art. For instance, The Great Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. These pyramids served as tombs of the pharaohs Menkaure, Khafre, and Khufu. When a pharaoh died it was believed that he rejoined the gods and became fully divine, so the pyramids were constructed and outfitted with everything he would need to maintain his royal lifestyle in eternity. These pyramids would be an example of social order in art.
Themes of Art (Chapter #3) This chapter showed a diversity of themes, but the one that I enjoyed was Politics and the social order, its amazing how we can learn through paintings, and politics will always going to be part of history. Lets begin with the egyptian civilizaton whos kings and queen are still named. Politics have been in our world since many years ago. Paintings are the best tool to remember all they type of goverment society has posses during the following 21 centuries.

A theme of art that I found quite interesting in the book would be Looking Inward: The Human Experience. This theme is based on the desire or wish to communicate with someone who is now dead. The human experience is based on something we must all face one day (death). The desire to talk is common, and artist Meta Warrick Fuller created a sculpture of a boy kneeling before a skull, who seems to be in tears. I imagine that this boy wishes he could communicate and reach out to the person who was once with him but is no longer existent. Meta Warrick Fuller developed different themes that helped African Americans reconnect with their ancestors and take satisfaction in African American heritage.
My Favorite art theme that hasn't been mentioned is Nonrepresentational or nonobjective art which is descriptive art that doesn't represent the visible world outside of itself. Unlike abstract art which is descriptive simply simplified. Vasily Kadinsky was one of the pioneers of this type of art; his work, Composition IX, on page 33, is one of my favorites. His work is more of the outcome feelings it produces like music, as he would say, doesn't represent anything but produces different emotions.
